Today we delved deeper into the L.C.S. pedagogy that Manaiakalani encourages. It is one that my Kura have been focusing on this past year, especially during the lockdowns. 

Thinking back on it we use our class sites to achieve this, setting up our tasks in Reading and Inquiry in the L.C.S. format. I believe it is a way that my students enjoy as well- just getting to read or watch/listen about a topic first.

Having Google Keep explained was interesting- a nice little add on, not necessarily one I would use, but it was good to know what it can do. My personal system of keeping track of notes and my to do list is chaotic, but works for me at the moment.

Filtering via labels in Gmail was new learning for me. With all the subscriptions and resources I have its nice to be able to organize my inbox a bit better.

The Create task was to look at a blog from a previous year, look at the teaching design, the learners response, and others reaction to it. I looked at Zara's from Belfast. We recorded ourselves talking about it, and then embedded it into our Blogs- below is the result (hopefully!)

I am not fully comfortable recording myself just yet so this activity was good practice. 

DFI Session 1

Kia ora Readers, 

Today we had our first DFI session for Term three. It is a very different experience being totally online for professional development. I was and still am very excited to learn new skills to help my students and give them new skills and tools to aid in their learning. 

I learnt about some new shortcuts to help me navigate and be more efficient when using Google suite, and increased my confidence using some of the less obvious features of Google Doc. I think today was a good "toe-dip" experience, reinforcing some of the basics that I think many might assume everyone can do. It's reassuring that the course is taking some time to build up the confidence of teachers who maybe new to using online tools in this manner. 

This year I have drifted away from using Google Doc and I leaned more toward using Google Slide- I found it easier and more engaging for the students. I found the session on making a poster just using Google doc very beneficial. Seeing what the other teachers in my bubble group did with their doc gave me some ideas on how I could use it more in class, or how my students could as well.

The 'Create' task product I made is for my students to know what they can say and do after I have given instructions on a task.  I have used the 'Red, Amber, Green' vocabulary in my class for a few weeks now and the students have responded well to it. 

I am looking forward to next week's session.

Teaching as Inquiry

The Manaiakalani Community of Learning is working together on this task using the expertise existing in of our community of learning.

#1. Raise Māori student achievement through the development of cultural visibility and responsive practices across the pathway as measured against National Standards and agreed targets for reading Years 1-10 and NCEA years 11-13

#2. Lift the achievement for boys' writing Years 1-10

#3. Increase the achievement of Years 7-10, in reading, writing and maths, as measured against National Standards and agreed targets

#4. Increase the achievement of Years 1-10 learners, with a focus on Years 7-10,  in reading, writing and maths, as measured against National Standards and agreed targets.

#5. Improve the achievement of students with additional needs in the learning areas of English/key competency using language symbols and texts

#6. Lift the achievement in maths for all students years 1-13

The teaching as inquiry framework I will be using in 2018 has been specifically co-constructed for Manaiakalani schools using our familiar Learn Create Share structure.
The elements in this framework share close similarities with other models New Zealand teachers use.

I will be labelling my posts as I update my inquiry throughout the year to make the content easy to access.
